Book Royalties Explained: How Kenyan Authors Get Paid on Wonderful Books

Wondering how authors earn from streaming books on Wonderful Books? This guide breaks down the streaming royalty pool model, M-Pesa payments, and practical tips to maximise your income as a Kenyan author.

Understanding the Streaming Royalty Model

If you are a Kenyan author, you have likely heard about streaming royalties but may be unsure how they work. Unlike traditional book sales where you earn a fixed amount per copy sold, Wonderful Books uses a streaming royalty pool model. This means every month, we set aside a portion of our subscription revenue — from readers paying KES 299/month or KES 2,999/year — into a single royalty pool. That pool is then divided among all authors based on how many minutes their books were streamed by subscribers.

Think of it like a radio royalty system but for books: the more people read your work, the larger your share of the pool. No complicated contracts or minimum sales thresholds. Just fair, transparent earnings tied directly to reader engagement.

How the Pool Works: Minutes = Money

Here is the simple formula: Your Royalty = (Your Total Streamed Minutes ÷ Total Platform Streamed Minutes) × Monthly Royalty Pool. For example, if your book is streamed for 10,000 minutes in a month and the entire platform records 1,000,000 minutes, you earn 1% of that month’s pool. We calculate this automatically every month, so you never have to worry about manual tracking.

This model rewards books that keep readers engaged — whether it is a gripping novel, a practical guide, or a children’s story that gets read aloud multiple times. Short, popular reads can earn just as much as long epics, as long as they are consistently streamed.

When and How You Get Paid (M-Pesa & Bank)

Payments are processed monthly, typically within the first 10 working days of the following month. We know that Kenyan authors rely on predictable income, so we have made payouts as seamless as possible. You can receive your royalties via M-Pesa directly to your phone — no need for a bank account if you prefer mobile money. Alternatively, we can deposit to your bank account (Equit
