Why Streaming Royalties Are Different from Traditional Publishing

If you are a Kenyan author used to the old model — where a publisher gives you a one-off advance or a percentage of printed book sales — the streaming royalty model can feel like a whole new world. On Wonderful Books, we do not pay you per book sold. Instead, we pay you from a shared revenue pool, calculated based on how much of your content your readers actually consume. Think of it like how Mdundo or Boomplay pays musicians for streams. The more your book is read, the more you earn. It is fair, transparent, and built for the digital age.

How the Royalty Pool Works

Every month, Wonderful Books collects subscription fees from our readers — paid via M-Pesa, Airtel Money, or card. We then put a fixed percentage of that total revenue into a single royalty pool. At the end of the month, we calculate each author’s share based on the total minutes their books were streamed divided by the total minutes all books were streamed. For example, if your book accounts for 2% of all reading time on the platform, you get 2% of that month’s pool. No hidden cuts, no complicated tiers. Just your fair share of what your readers actually enjoy.

When and How You Get Paid

Royalties are calculated on the first day of every month for the previous month. So if your book is read heavily in January, you will see your earnings reflected in early February. Payments are sent directly to your M-Pesa number (or bank account if you prefer) within 7 to 10 working days after calculation. We know that for many Kenyan authors, M-Pesa is the easiest way to receive money — whether you are in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, or a smaller town. You do not need a bank account, and you do not need to chase cheques. Just link your Safaricom line in your author dashboard, and we handle the rest.
