Book Royalties Explained: How Kenyan Authors Earn on Wonderful Books

Published 16 July 2026 by Wonderful Books Editorial

A clear, practical guide to the streaming royalty model on Wonderful Books — how the payment pool works, when M-Pesa hits your phone, and tips to grow your earnings as a Kenyan author.

How the Wonderful Books Royalty Pool Works

Unlike traditional publishing where you earn a fixed amount per copy sold, Wonderful Books uses a streaming royalty model similar to music platforms. Every month, we set aside a dedicated royalty pool based on total subscription revenue from our users. This pool is then shared among all authors based on how much your book is read — measured by minutes streamed and pages engaged with. The more Kenyans read your book, the larger your share of the pool.

This model rewards consistent engagement rather than one-time purchases. A reader in Kisumu who listens to your audiobook for 10 hours contributes more to your royalties than a quick skim. It also means your book keeps earning month after month as long as it remains on the platform.

When and How You Get Paid (M-Pesa & Bank)

Payments are processed monthly, typically within the first two weeks after the month ends. You can receive your earnings directly via M-Pesa to your registered Safaricom number — no need for a bank account. We also support bank transfers for larger payouts, but M-Pesa is the fastest and most popular option among Kenyan authors.

You will receive a payment notification via SMS and email, showing exactly how many minutes your book was read and your calculated share. Minimum payout threshold is low enough that even emerging authors see regular payments. There are no hidden fees — what you earn is what you receive.

What Affects Your Royalty Share
